Launceston City Heart Project: dzień 2, Civic Square /LCH Project: day 2/

PROJEKT, DZIEŃ 2

Tego dnia postanowiliśmy zmienić rozplanowanie większości prototypów na placu, bo jak sama nazwa wskazuje - prototypy służą do testowania i zbierania wniosków, a tych mieli nam dostarczyć niczego nieświadomi przechodnie. Pułapka na ludzi została zbudowana między 7, a 9 rano (około). Potem staraliśmy się wtopić w krajobraz i nie sprawiać wrażenia naukowców przyglądających się królikom doświadczalnym (bo to mogłoby tylko je niepokoić). Króliczków było całkiem sporo! Tym razem postanowiliśmy zastąpić linearny układ długiego stołu kilkoma zakręcającymi strukturami, tworząc małe zamknięte przestrzenie, dające pewne poczucie prywatności - zdecydowanie był to trafiony pomysł, bo o wiele śmielej z nich korzystano. Poza tym główna struktura została nieco przesunięta ze środka placu - co zmniejszało wrażenie siedzenia w samym centrum uwagi (takie rzeczy bardzo wpływają na to, jak komfortowo korzysta się z przestrzeni publicznej). Oczywiście kreda dla dzieci była elementem obowiązkowym, jednak rodzice z dziećmi tworzą bardzo istotną, jak nie najistotniejszą grupę użytkowników takich przestrzeni. Tyle w kwestii suchej gadki o założeniach projektowych, o której przerzucenie bez czytania też się nie obrażę:) Z ciekawych opcji było na przykład to, że Kena siedzącego pod namiotem z naszymi rzeczami często pytano, czy sprzedaje kwiatki! Ludzie całkiem chętnie wypełniali ankiety, jak się z nimi najpierw pogadało o projekcie, dużo chętniej niż gdy próbowaliśmy im je wręczać ot tak pierwszego dnia. Najwyraźniej też się czegoś nauczyliśmy o podstawach marketingu.

/THE PROJECT - DAY 2/

/The second day of Launceston City Heart Project was all about planning a different alignment of the prototypes - because the prototyping itself is basically testing and taking notes. Our conclusions were based on observations. The observed ones were unaware pedestrians. The trap was built between 7 and 9 AM (approximately). After completing the construction we tried to blend in the environment and not seem like we were the scientists who observe the behaviour of guinea-pigs (that could make them feel awkward). We had quite a lot of guinea-pigs! This time we decided to replace the linear table structure with some curves making several closed spaces, which were supposed to create a sense of privacy - which was definitely a great idea, because people were less shy about using them. Furthermore the structure was moved a bit to the side of the square, which decreased the feeling of sitting in the centre of everyone's attention (these things really have an impact on how a person feels in the public space). Obviously the chalk for kids was a compulsory thing - parents with children are one of the most important target groups when creating a public space. That's it in the matter of architectural blabbering - I will not feel offended for skipping it without reading:) One of the interesting things was the fact, that Ken (who was sitting under the tent with our things) was asked several times if he was selling flowers! People filled the survey pages willingly, when we talked about the project first - a lot more likely than if we tried to put them in their hands by surprise. Apparently we learned something about basic marketing as well.

WNIOSKI

Tego dnia było trochę bardziej oficjalnie, ponieważ pojawiło się paru VIPów i popełniono kilka przemówień. Generalnie projekt uważam za bardzo udany, zastanawia mnie tylko, do jakiego stopnia zbadane przez nas zagadnienia wpłyną na politykę przestrzenną miasta i czy będzie można w przyszłości chwalić się zaangażowaniem w udaną inicjatywę miejską. Ja jestem jak zwykle pełen optymizmu i życzę miastu jak najlepiej, ponieważ ktoś wreszcie powinien wyciągnąć tych Launcestończyków z aut! :) Pozdrawiam czytelników, niedługo relacja z ostatniego dnia - The Mall.

/FINAL THOUGHTS/

/The second day was a bit more official - some VIPs showed up and some speeches were given. Generally speaking I call this project a success, I just wonder how will our observations be processed by the Council and how the prototyping will impact the politics around the creation of public spaces in Launceston. Maybe in the future we will be able to brag about taking part in some great designing initiative... I am (as usual) full of optimism and I wish the best for the town, because somebody should finally draw the Launceston people out of their cars! :) Best regards to those who read this blog, the relation from the last day (The Mall) will be here shortly./
